## Builder Mike Guertin Explains 3 Ways To Calculate The Quantity Of Shingles You’ll Need For Your Next Roofing Job

How to Calculate Square Footage | The Home Depot

One of the biggest challenges for experienced builder and novices alike is accurately estimating materials for a construction projectespecially for roofs, because they can be difficult to access for taking measurements.

But dont fretIn this excerpt from my book Roofing with Asphalt Shingles, I describe three reliable methods for determining the area of a roof, plus Ive included tips for estimating the number of extra shingles youll need for waste, overlaps, and starter shingles.

**Note:** be sure to take your time and double-check your numbers when calculating the quantity of shingles, underlayment, flashings, and other materials needed for your**roofing project**. The more accurate your estimates, the less time youll waste waiting for material deliveries during the project.

## Hip And Ridge Cap Roofing Shingles

A bundle of hip and ridge cap roofing shingles has between 20 and 24 shingles. GAF hip and ridge shingles have 30 pieces per bundle. Owens Corning hip and ridge shingles have 24 shingles per bundle.

Owens Corning hip and ridge shingles come as a 36×12 3-tab shingle, with pre-cut perforations that allow you to tear off each hip and ridge shingle. So one shingle is 3 hip and ridge shingles. They sell packs of 24 shingles, but each shingle contains 3 hip ridge shingles, so you get 72 in all. This will cover 33 linear feet of your hip or ridge.

GAF hip and ridge shingles are 12 x 12, and it takes 30 of them to make 20 linear feet. If you use them to make hip joints to your peaks, then the linear length may be less as youll use more shingles to bridge the peak to hip transition.

## How To Calculate Number Of Roofing Shingles

Fortunately, you don’t have to make a haphazard shingle estimate when planning for your roofing project: your roof size and chosen shingle type will guide the purchase process.

Shingles are sold in prepackaged bundles, not individually. Roofing manufacturers take the guesswork out of how many bundles you need per squareit’s listed in the specifications of each shingle they make. The specs for any given shingle will tell you how many bundles make up a square, how many shingles are in a square, and even the approximate number of nails you’ll need per square.

Often, three bundles of prepackaged asphalt shingles make one square, as is the case with the Timberline® HDZ Shingles. That said, the number of bundles you need can vary depending on shingle design. For example, five bundles of architectural asphalt shingles with artisan-crafted shapes, such as the Grand Sequoia® Shingle, cover one square. Once you know the number of squares of material your roof needs, check the shingle manufacturer specifications so you get your hands on exactly what you need.

If you’re still deciding on the perfect shingle for your roof, play around with the GAF VirtualRemodeler. The free online tool helps you envision how different shingle colors and styles would work with your home’s style. Be sure to keep local building codes in mind as you weigh your shingle options..

## How Many Shingles Do I Need To Cover A Roof

The number of bundles or squares you need will depend on the surface area of your roof, and its pitch or slope. For example, a 2,000 square foot roof will require 20 squares or 60 bundles. A professional will likely purchase slightly more materials than necessary to ensure there is extra material if needed.

For an accurate account of the number of square you need, use our Roof Shingles Calculator.

## How Many Shingles In A Bundle

Im starting to think about re-shingling my roof as its got some age and the shingles are looking a little rough. Since my roof is a couple of rectangles, its easy to calculate the surface area. I figured I could estimate how many shingles I needed and the total cost. But before I calculated the cost, I still needed to know how many shingles in a bundle?

**For traditional asphalt 3-tab roof shingles, there are 26 pieces in a bundle. Architectural shingles will have around 21 shingles per bundle for similar square footage, as they are larger than standard 3-tab shingles.**

Depending on the shingle manufacturer, the number of shingles in a bundle can vary widely. Since shingle dimensions vary so much, it is often helpful to have a shingle calculator to determine the number of pieces and bundles youll need for your project.

In this article, well take a look at a shingle calculator that helps you with precise estimates for your roofing material, as well as various examples of roofs and how to determine shingle bundles and squares for a new, shingled roof.

## Find The Area Of The Footprint Of The Roof

To calculate a roofs dimensions, you need to measure the roof as if it were flat, then account for roof pitch, calculate square footage, and finally determine how many squares of material are required for the roof.

The calculator above can handle all of this, simply enter the length, width, and pitch, and it will determine the size of the roof in squares.

Start by measuring the roofs length and width in feet as youre standing on the ground. Remember that the length and width need to be found for the roof, not the house, so take into account that the roof overhangs the building.

Then determine the area of the roof as if it were flat. Multiply the length by the width in feet to get the area measurement.

## Calculate The Amount Of Asphalt Or Fiberglass Shingles Needed To Cover A Hip Roof

A hip roof’s square footage is equal to that of a gable roof with the same dimensions. The difference is in the amount of ridge capping you need and the amount you will waste. The top ridge will be shorter for a hip roof, but the 4 hips will add to the amount of ridge capping needed and because of the angles the amount of waste will be higher than for a similar sized gable roof.

#### As a note:

But with all the different types available, not all packs are equal in the amount of pieces they contain, the length of the individual shingle and the square foot coverage per pack. Not all types of shingles can be used for the starter strip and the ridge capping needed or you could be using ridge caps to cover the top ridge and the hips. That is why this calculator requires “the square foot one pack will cover” and the results for starter strip and ridge capping is in lineal feet needed for those two items and is not included in the Total Packs Needed.

## How Long Does A Shingle Roof Last

Shingles: Signs, Symptoms and Treatment with Dr. Mark Shalauta | San Diego Health

These roofs may last **20 to 200 years** or more depending on the type of material being used. While you’re talking to the manufacturer, find out how long the warranty will last. Warranties often depend on proper installation and regular maintenance in order to remain in effect.

**Asphalt:**15-30 years**Metal:**50 years or more**Clay:**75 years or longer**Slate:**125-200 years

Not all materials are created equal and their quality can vary. Harsh climates with extreme heat or cold, frequent freeze/thaw cycles or high-wind storms can wear out shingles more quickly. To find out how long your material of choice will last, check with your roofing professional, the manufacturer or read the product warranty.

## How Many Extra Shingles Should You Buy

If you order shingles based solely on the area of the roof, you wont have enough. Youll need shingles for starter courses along the eaves and sometimes at rakes, and youll need shingles to cap hips and ridges. Cutting shingles also generates waste. In some places, including at the rakes, against walls and chimneys, and at valleys, youll need to cut shingles. Some of the cutoffs will be big enough to use as starter shingles or in other areas where cut shingles are needed, but smaller cutoffs will be waste.

## Using A Roofing Calculator To Measure Your Roofs Square Footage

To access a roofing calculator, consider tools like RoofCalc or Calculator.net, both of which are free and user friendly. Remember the term plane from 9th grade geometry? Here, plane refers to each distinct flat surface of your roof, or roof plane.

Remember also that multiplying **length by width** equals area? Simply measure each planes square footage, then add all of them together. This sum equals the total square footage of your roof.

To calculate the square footage, **measure the area of each plane**. From the top of your roof, throw a rope down and mark to measure where it meets the eaves .

Of course, this sounds simple, but when you start getting planes that are trapezoids or pentagons, or irregular shapes with unequal sides figuring the square footage can be complicated. Our suggestionjust put your mind at ease and get a quote from Ace Construction Roofing Company.

**Measure the roof slope **

A roof surface may be either functionally flat or pitched. A roofs pitch, or slope, measures its steepness, shown as either a ratio or the number of angular degrees a roofing plane deviates from horizontal level. You will need to measure this as well, especially if your roof is particularly steep.

**Roofing calculator basics for a simple gable roof**

To calculate pitch, first measure the roof length by measuring the exterior walls for the length of the house parallel to the ridge .

## Do I Need A Permit To Install Or Replace My Roof

**Typically, yes.** The particulars of who can pull a permit and what information is required varies by state and municipality. Check with your local building department to find out. The average cost for a building permit is **about $250 to $500**. Failure to get a permit may result in work being stopped before the roof can be completed. If a project is completed without a permit, you may have difficulty selling your home in the future because an inspector or appraiser will likely notice and flag the work.

## What Everyone Should Know About The Shingles Vaccine

Shingles vaccination is the only way to protect against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia , the most common complication from shingles. CDC recommends that healthy adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix , separated by 2 to 6 months, to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you Shingrix as a shot in your upper arm.

Shingrix provides strong protection against shingles and PHN. Two doses of Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN. Protection stays above 85% for at least the first four years after you get vaccinated.

## How To Measure A Roof For Shingles

There are several different methods to calculate the square footage of your roof. If you remember back to grade school, youll recall that youll multiply the length times the width to find the area of a rectangle.

If you are lucky enough to have a simple roof, say a gabled roof with two identical sides or even a single sloping roof, then calculating your roof area will be a breeze. On the other hand, if you have a roof with hips and multiple gables, then youll need to spend a bit more time calculating your roof square footage.

Here are several ways to measure roof area for shingles.

## Instructions For The Shingle Calculator

Enter the approximate value for how many square feet the house has in the first number box.

Select how steep the roof is. A 4/12 pitch is relatively easy to walk, an 8/12 is very difficult to walk, and a 12/12 is impossible to walk.

Select the complexity of the roof. One roof line is simple, two to four roof lines is average, and anything over four roof lines is complex.

Choose whether or not your roof is new or will have multiple layers to remove.

Finally, choose what type of new roofing will be used.

This calculator is only an estimation. It is not as accurate as measuring each roof plane and adding the square feet together. It does take into account for an average number of offsets and an overhang. It also takes into account for the starters, the edges, and the ride caps. The squares returned include everything.

The formula for solving for the area of a roof involves climbing onto the roof. Measure each roof plane. For shapes such as trapezoids, triangles, and trapeziums, find the average length by finding the center of the width. Remember to add two feet for valleys. Add the square footage of all of the roof planes together. Divide this by one hundred for the number of squares. There are three bundles of shingles for each square.

To determine how many will be needed for starters and edges, measure the entire perimeter of the roof and divide it by three. Since there are twenty six shingles in a bundle of twenty year shingles , divide the result by twenty six.
